This past weekend I had an amazing time running my first ever marathon in Eau Claire Wisconsin. It was a great experience and something I will certainly be doing again in the future. You might be thinking, why did I decide to run a marathon? It was not a mechanism for me to get in better shape, as I know that running is not the best tool to burn calories and change body composition. That's what strength training and dieting is for. The honest reason I signed up is because I wanted to pursue a new physically challenging goal that I wasn’t sure I could achieve when I clicked register back in December. Back then, I had all of the self doubt going through my head: I’m not a natural runner, I’m too heavy to run, I’m too busy, and frankly at the time 5 miles would crush me. How was I going to run 26.2? Well, throughout my training in the 5 months between signing up and actually running the race, I answered that question by constantly reminding myself of 2 things. They sound cliché, but I think they are applicable to anyone.
Your goal doesn’t have to be to run a marathon. It could be anything such as losing 50 lbs, gaining 15 lbs of muscle, running a 5k, or doing a big hike. Regardless of what it might be, the point is that it should scare you. As for working towards your goal, there are going to be obstacles. For my goal, the obstacles were running outdoors during a brutal Minnesota winter and trying to balance my time with work and other priorities. For your goal, the obstacles might include work being busy, having kids and family obligations, traveling a lot, or simply not feeling motivated on a given day. In the process of training for my race, I found that I could overcome any obstacle because my goal meant something to me. Hopefully you can take something away from my experience and set a meaningful goal to pursue that scares you. We would love to hear about it and support you on the journey!
